Six Things You Should Do on the First Day With the Team

1. Smile
A dour expression will not just keep everyone away, but it may also be misinterpreted as a sign of arrogance. A smile, on the other hand, creates a great first impression and makes you approachable. You will not struggle to make friends, and it will be much easier to learn about how the team operates. Your team mates will find it easy to correct you when you make a mistake. In essence, a smile will help you to get along with others. This will not only positively affect your performance, but it will also ensure that you are not thrown off the team. No one loves a grouch, so smile!

2. Listen
You will learn find it much easier to get along with others if you take the time to listen to them. Listening tells your team mates that you value them. God gave people two ears and one mouth so that they would speak less and listen more, holds a popular aphorism. Take that advice; it works.

3. Be Confident
Lack of confidence will make it harder to relate with your team mates. It may negatively affect your performance, and it will cause others to doubt your abilities. Do you feel inadequate? You are not alone. Many successful people initially struggled to believe in themselves. It may help to remember that those who selected you saw qualities that your competitors lacked. In addition, don't forget that you had to beat many others to be accepted into the team. You are the best of the best, the cream of the crop, so be confident.

4. Avoid Taking Sides
Some teams are riven with conflicts that may not be immediately noticeable. Since you are new to the team, avoid taking sides. Do all you can to get along with everyone in the team. Avoid spending too much time with any party to the conflict, and do not criticize others unnecessarily, as this may be interpreted to mean that you've picked sides. Avoid gossip, as it can be used against you. Sitting on the fence does not make you a wimp; it just means that you will not take part in disagreements whose origins you neither know nor understand.

5. Avoid Arrogance
You may be the best player in the team, and everyone, including the captain, may look up to you, but that is not an excuse to be arrogant, rude or disrespectful. Take a lesson from Ling Yao, who wisely points out that a king without subjects is nothing. In the same way, you are nothing without the team. You need others as much as they need you. Do not let success get to your head; instead, help your team mates become as good as you are.

6. Avoid Laziness
Just because you made the team does not mean that you can spend your first day, or any other day for that matter, lazing around. You need to prove your worth; that is why you were selected to join the team in the first place. The best way to do this is by setting increasingly challenging goals for yourself. In addition, seek to learn from those who are better than you. Finally, always remember these words, culled from Jennifer Lopez's song, I'm Into You; every finish line is the start of a brand new race.
